Rewards and Recognition in Immunization Programs

Lisa Lynn Dettling, Health and Wellness, Saint Mary's Health Network, 745 W. Moana Lane, Suite 100, Reno, NV, USA

KEYWORDS:
Using rewards and recognition to improve immunization efforts.

BACKGROUND:
The Washoe County Immunization Coalition in Reno, Nevada found a great number of providers in our community making efforts to improve immunization rates for children, adolescents and adults, yet none were being recognized for their efforts.

OBJECTIVE(S):
Provide a public tool for recognition and rewards for providers and partners who have contributed positively the immunization efforts in our community.

METHOD(S):
Develop an annual awards program, called Silver Syringe, to recognize:
- pediatric provider with the highest immunization rate with 2 year olds
- pediatric provider(s) with the most improved immunization rate
- pediatric providers with sustained excellence in immunizations
- community partners who have made special effort to enhance immunizations
Awards based on CASA data, public and coalition nominations.
Award winners receive public recognition and an office plaque for display. Winning efforts are outlined in Coalition newsletter and on a videotape used at immunization programs.

RESULT(S):
Annually several practices attain 100% on 2-year old immunizations and many fall in the 90% range. Programs for adolescents and adults have been recognized with Silver Syringe Awards and we've experienced a stronger community effort. Attendance at our program has increased and we see many providers at the event.

CONCLUSIONS(S):
Our Coalition learned rewards and recognition are an effective tool for improving immunization efforts. Immunization groups across the country without recognition programs can easily model a program similar to Silver Syringe.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Reinforce positive efforts of immunization providers and partners through recognition.
- Identify strategies that raise immunization visibility through recognition.
- Describe recognition activities that improve involvement in immunization efforts.
- Share methods of establishing a recognition program.
