ICD-10 CM transition panel session will provide an overview regarding the impact of ICD-10 CM transition to public health (data usage - Morbidity aggregated data and statistics, Clinical Quality Measures, Research, Syndromic Surveillance). CDC National Center of Health Statistics will provide guidance regarding the ICD-10 CM transition (e.g. General equivalent mappings between ICD-9 CM and ICD-10 CM). This session will also outline the tools and actions that could be taken now to adopt the ICD-10 CM on Oct 1st, 2013. CDC NCHS program, Public Health Department and a healthcare provider would be serving as panelists and answer the questions regarding the ICD-10 CM transition.
CDC National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is the nation’s principal health statistics agency that is responsible for use of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. Department of Health & Human Services has mandated a migration to ICD-10 code sets for morbidity data on October 1, 2013. The United States has been using ICD-10 for mortality data since 1999.  This new transition will require system and business changes throughout the health care industry. This session will provide a comprehensive perspective on CDC’s approach to the transition. 

NCHS will present an overview regarding the impact of ICD-10 CM transition to public health (data usage - Morbidity aggregated data and statistics, Clinical Quality Measures, Research, Syndromic Surveillance). NCHS will provide guidance regarding the ICD-10 CM transition (e.g. General equivalent mappings between ICD-9 CM and ICD-10 CM). NCHS will also outline the tools and actions that could be taken now to adopt the ICD-10 CM on Oct 1st, 2013. NCHS, NLM and IHTSDO SNOMED are actively working on the mapping between ICD-10 CM and SNOMED CT.

CDC BioSense program will give a Public Health perspective of ICD-10 CM Transition as they need to make changes to the content, applications and data marts. BioSense program would need to develop the ICD-10 CM syndromes. BioSense program needs to work with the data sources regarding the transmission of ICD-10 CM and make changes to the BioSense implementation guide.

CDC ICD-10 Transition Workgroup will provide a perspective on how CDC is preparing for the ICD-10 CM transition and the expected impact on CDC systems. Workgroup efforts include conducting outreach to and carrying out a needs assessment of CDC systems affected by the change.  The workgroup will document issues found as well as lessons learned from programs that have begun the transition.
