Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Wuhib joined NCPHI from the Division of Global AIDS Program (GAP) in the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention of the CDC, where he was Country Manager providing overall oversight to CDC country programs (Global AIDS Program) in Afghanistan, Angola, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zambia. A native of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Dr. Wuhib, served as the first country director for the Global AIDS Program in Ethiopia for 6 ½ years. Dr. Wuhib was recognized for his work with 29 medals, certificates, awards, plaques, etc. from CDC and Ethiopia. Dr. Wuhib began his medical studies at the Gondar College of Medical Sciences, in Gondar, Ethiopia, before completing a bachelor’s degree from the College of Saint Rose, Albany, New York. He received his doctor of medicine and master’s degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland and a doctor of human letters from his undergraduate alma mater. Dr. Wuhib, after training in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital Oakland, California, entered the Epidemic Intelligence Service of CDC, and completed a preventive medicine residency program at CDC in the Louisiana Office of Public Health before joining CDC as a staff in US domestic HIV surveillance branch. His work at CDC has included provision of HIV/AIDS epidemiologic/surveillance support to the States; serving as the surveillance expert on injection drug users (IDUs); teaching and supervising students; carrying out epidemiologic studies including as the principal investigator of a large childhood mortality study in Kazakhstan, and building the chronic diseases epidemiology and surveillance capacity in Louisiana. His international work has included infectious and pediatrics-related surveillance systems in Tanzania (with the Integrated Disease Surveillance Initiative), as well as Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgystan. Dr. Wuhib has authored or co-authored more than 27 articles and 33 abstracts and has presented at several conferences and seminars.
