The Planning Committee welcomes submission of abstracts for oral presentations, poster sessions, pre-organized symposia, and skills-building workshops that focus on critical issues in the field of STD prevention and related fields. Please refer to the main conference website to review conference theme and high priority issues for the 2008 conference. In order to ensure that the conference is able to feature a broad spectrum of the best STD prevention work in the country, we ask that you submit no more than 2 abstracts on which you are the primary author, only one of which can be submitted as a single oral presentation.

One of the unique features of the National STD Prevention Conference is the planned interface of science, program, and policy for STD prevention. Research presented at this conference should have explicit program or policy relevance. Toward that end, the Planning Committee strongly encourages authors to consider and present the practical implications of their work and to explicitly address in abstract submissions how findings will impact program, policy, and/or research. Therefore, the abstract format includes a section called "implications for program, policy and/or research." Organizers request that implications be as specific as possible to allow conference delegates to make informed decisions about the presentations they attend.

In addition, the organizers are interested in research, programs, and policy that have succeeded, partially succeeded, and failed in achieving anticipated results. All such findings can be particularly useful to those who manage programs, develop policy, or conduct research, allowing them to learn from experience and refine their efforts accordingly. All abstracts should describe investigation methods and primary findings in sufficient detail to allow reviewers to fully evaluate the scientific merit of the work. Abstracts failing to adhere to these requirements will not be reviewed.

General Submission Guidelines

All presenters must be registered to attend the conference. Note that early bird registration is due Monday, January 21, 2008; Pre-registration is due Monday, February 18, 2008.

  • For each presenter, please provide: name, degrees, affiliation, mailing address, email address, phone number, fax number, education, professional experience, and conflict of interest disclosure. These items are not included in the 300 word limit. Information can be cut and pasted from an existing CV. Please note that poster abstracts do not require information about education, professional experience and conflict of interest disclosure.
  • For all other authors you are only required to provide name, affiliation, city/State, and email address.
  • You are strongly encouraged to compose the abstract text in your own word processor before submitting it online. Be sure to check spelling, word count, and conformance with the guidelines given below.
  • Notification of abstract status is anticipated to be provided by Friday, December 14, 2007.
  • Final acceptance is conditional upon registration of all presenters.

Abstract Requirements

There are four types of sessions: oral presentations, posters, symposia, and workshops. Selected abstracts not accepted for oral presentation may be accepted for presentation in poster form during a designated poster session. The timing of poster sessions will be confirmed when the program is finalized. Authors are required to be available for discussion of their work during the designated poster session. Further instructions for presentations accepted as posters will be given on notification of acceptance. To view specific requirements, click below:

Symposium (1 hour & 45 minutes) (see example)

Symposia are expert panels organized by attendees and optimally include 4-5 presenters. The number of presenters is left to the organizer’s discretion. Symposia should address new or complex topics that do not easily lend themselves to other presentation formats (for example, presentation of original research data on a single topic is typically better suited to poster format or 10-minute oral presentation). Preference will be shown for panels that demonstrate a clear relationship between research, program, and policy. Preference will also be shown for symposia that support the conference theme and address key issues identified in the call for abstracts.
Information required for submission:
  1. Abstract which includes summary (no more than 100 words in length) and individual descriptions of each presentation (no more than 100 words in length for each description):
    • Summary to include the following headings:
      • Background/Purpose
      • Objectives of Symposium
      • Implications for Programs, Policy, and/or Research
    • Descriptions of each presentation. Each description should indicate how this portion of the session will respond to the symposium objectives by describing key issues to be presented, relevant data, and conclusions.

  2. Panel Line-up
Please include title of individual talks and presenters. If a discussant is included, that person must be listed in the line-up along with the other panel presenters. Complete author information, biographical information and disclosures are required for all presenters as indicated in the general guidelines.
  3. Measurable Learning Objectives
All abstracts submitted for symposium presentation must also include no more than 2 learning objectives. To make these objectives measurable, use wording such as: "By the end of this session, participants will be able to (e.g., discuss, identify, list, describe, evaluate, summarize, explain, demonstrate, organize, etc.) cost-effectiveness of screening policies in correctional settings and their potential impact on racial disparities in STD rates.
The learning objectives are not included in the abstract word count.

Workshop (1 hour & 45 minutes) (see example)

Workshops should be designed to enhance skills and include interactive components. Workshop proposals must explicitly address enhancing specific skills; submissions failing to meet this criterion will not be considered. Workshops will be limited to approximately 50 participants. Information required for submission:
  1. Abstract (300 words in length), organized into 3 sections with the following headings:
    • Background
    • Purpose
    • Methods (instructional approach)
  2. Complete author information, biographical information and disclosures are required for all workshop presenters as indicated in the general guidelines.
  3. Measurable Learning Objectives
All abstracts submitted for workshop presentation must also include no more than 2 learning objectives. To make these objectives measurable, use wording such as: "By the end of this session, participants will be able to (e.g., discuss, identify, list, describe, evaluate, summarize, explain, demonstrate, organize, answer, etc.) key components of program evaluation."
The learning objectives are not included in the 300-word count.
