Objective:This session will describe the efforts and results of the Kansas Diabetes Action Council’s (KDAC) process for developing and implementing the 2008-2013 Kansas Diabetes Plan. The session will also include examples of tangible products developed by KDAC during the implementation of the Kansas Diabetes Plan.

Methods:KDAC was formed in the early 1980s to address the problem of diabetes and its complications in Kansas. From its inception, a key priority for KDAC was to conduct a strategic planning process followed by developing and implementing a state diabetes plan. That process waxed and waned over many years and, as a result, the Kansas Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP), as KDAC’s convener/facilitator, conducted an assessment of the process in 2006.

Results:Refocusing on assessing and improving KDAC’s strategic planning process resulted in the final development and implementation of the Kansas Diabetes Plan. KDAC is in its 2nd year of implementing the Plan and has produced tangible products/outcomes resulting from the goals of the Plan. Some examples include: a Diabetes Primary Prevention Community Intervention Toolkit; Community Diabetes Awareness Event Toolkit; Diabetes Legislative Day Plan; Diabetes Media Plan; Diabetes Primary Prevention Presentation Toolkit for healthcare professionals, and Resolutions supporting the Kansas Diabetes Plan introduced in the House and Senate of the Kansas Legislature.

Conclusion:Assessing state advisory council’s partnerships, strategic planning processes and implementing improvement strategies can lead to an energized membership implementing successful state plans.
