Biographical Sketch:
Trained as a cultural anthropologist, I have extensive experience of over 13 years in conducting focus group and other kinds of group interviews. In addition, I teach the focus group methodology at the University of Pittsburgh, and have conducted numerous trainings on the methodology for community agencies. Over the last five years I have partnered with the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute, as we explore barriers and facilitators to self-management of diabetes in rural Pennsylvania. As part of that collaboration, I have conducted nine focus groups in rural communities as well as the thirteen focus groups group discussions with primary care practice staff. Several presentations have resulted from this partnership, including a poster entitled Chronic Care Model-Based Focus Groups, prepared for the 2007 ADA national meetings. Also in collaboration with the Diabetes Institute, I conducted six focus groups with military personnel and military spouses in Texas.
