Biographical Sketch:
Jan works for the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute as an Advance Practice Nurse. In that role she coordinates the largest multi-site group of diabetes educator programs recognized by the ADA. The Pittsburgh Regional Initiative for Diabetes Education encompasses currently 22 sites with 17 program expansion sites. Jan works with 34 CDE’s plus many more educators in many disciplines.
Jan also was the project manager for the development and testing of the AADE Outcomes System. This system provides diabetes educators with a comprehensive way to tract patient behavior outcomes, program management and other tools which enhance diabetes education. This system was recently launched by AADE. She is also working on another system for diabetes education and educators which can be used to track all aspects needed for ADA Recognition. This system is still in development, but pilot testing has begun.
She received her bachelors and masters degrees in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. She previously worked as the Administrative Manager of the Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology which is a university based practice for University of Pittsburgh faculty. This Endocrinology practice has 10,000 patient visits per year and she continues to maintain a clinical practice there. Previous positions, all in the diabetes field, have focused on her interests as both a clinician and program manager.
Jan has also served on the board of Diabetes Forecast for the past four years and frequently is featured in the “Ask the Expert” column. She has also co-authored articles in The Diabetes Educator and Diabetes Voice among other publications. She speaks nationally and internationally and has trained hundred’s of diabetes educators in Conversation Map use. She is a former officer with the Endocrine Nurses Society, a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and a member and volunteer for the American Diabetes Association.
