Biographical Sketch:
Community Programs Liaison / Diabetes Program Coordinator, Health Promotion & Chronic Disease Prevention Section, Oregon Public Health Division, 2008 – present Provide technical assistance and consultation to local public health programs and chronic disease prevention partners to implement interventions based on best practices that promote policy, systems, and environmental change around nutrition, physical activity, tobacco, early detection, and self-management. Assure the goals of the Oregon Diabetes Prevention and Control Program are met by developing objectives, writing grants and reports, contributing to strategic planning, coordinating activities with partners and grantees, and evaluating program success. Safe Routes to School Program Coordinator, Bicycle Transportation Alliance, 2006 to 2008 Coordinated encouragement, education, and engineering interventions to increase opportunities for transportation that involve physical activity. Worked with school administration, neighborhood and parent organizations, and individual families to facilitate behavior change to actively commute to school. Research Assistant, Portland State University, 2004 to 2006 Studied methods of teaching fourth grade students about exposure to noise and hearing loss, with researchers from Oregon Health & Science University. Collaborated with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, two public school districts, school nurses, and volunteer high school students. Administered surveys and assessed data for presentations. Research Associate, Kaiser Center for Health Research, 2002 to 2005 Functioned as co-investigator and project manager on two studies funded by the Centers for Disease Control to investigate potential links between occupational exposures and chronic lung disease. Presented findings at international conference. Prepared manuscripts for publication. Responsible for administrative aspects of grants, including budgeting, report writing, training and staff oversight. Safety Educator and Research Coordinator, University of Oregon, 2001 to 2002 Designed and provided occupational health and safety education programs. Coordinated a research study to investigate the effectiveness of safety interventions in the construction industry. Senior Industrial Hygienist, Oregon Health & Science University, 1998 to 2000 Developed a state-funded health and safety education program for laboratory workers. Managed all aspects of the project, including grant writing, topic research, program development, and pilot implementation. Industrial Hygienist, Environmental, Occupational, and Injury Epidemiology Section, Oregon Public Health Division, 1996 to 2002 Conducted investigations of occupational injury and illness identified during surveillance programs sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Projects involved migrant and seasonal farmworker injuries, pesticide poisonings, lead poisonings, and dermatitis.
