Objective:Increase participants’ knowledge and skills to identify, adopt and implement NDEP toolkits addressing diabetes prevention and control among ethnic minority populations.
Methods:African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and some Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at particularly high risk for type 2 diabetes and its complications. The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) has developed toolkits to help organizations develop effective outreach and educational strategies to address these populations. The toolkits have been tested in the target populations and are based on approaches used in the CARE model and the Diabetes Prevention Program. They are intended to help organizations adopt culturally appropriate, evidence based strategies by providing flexible tools and resources that can be integrated into existing activities. Results:This workshop will prepare participants to implement NDEP toolkits. Skills essential to successful toolkit implementation include engaging leadership, collaborating with stakeholders, developing action plans and working as a team to enhance implementation. The workshop uses a Café method in which a collaborative, idea building process is used to develop strategies, creative opportunities, and ideas for action.
Conclusion:This workshop focuses on enhancing the knowledge and skills participants need to implement NDEP toolkits or support partner organizations in toolkit implementation.
