Integration; vaccine inventory/management

BACKGROUND:
The Vaccine Inventory Management System (VIMS) is an inventory management and information application for vaccines distributed in Canada.

OBJECTIVE(S):
· Support public health-care professionals at all levels manage vaccine inventories;
· Support health-care providers engaged in immunization campaigns;
· Support vaccine safety and post-marketing surveillance activities;
· Support vaccine usage and wastage assessment activities; and
· Allow pharmaceutical firms to maintain inventories of vaccines on a national database.

METHOD(S):
· Uses a Web interface;
· Consists of a single repository (database) of information for all users;
· Maintains a history of vaccine distribution and use in Canada;
· Restricts access to the data to authorized users only;
· Protects the data from loss or compromise; and
· Takes advantage of web services for business-to-business transactions.

RESULT(S):
· The VIMS will be able to maintain a history of vaccines and their distribution;
· The VIMS can be updated in real-time as a by-product of health-care providers scanning bar codes and immunizing Canadians;
· Manufacturers can maintain their own inventories in the VIMS via Web interface or Web services;
· The VIMS can interface with any existing Vaccine Associated Adverse Events (VAAES) database(s);
· The VIMS will be capable of full and extensive data auditing;
· The VIMS will be an essential supporting tool of all Canadian immunization registry(s);

CONCLUSIONS(S):
VIMS is a mandatory requirement for the electronic retrieval of vaccine information so that the immunization registry(s) can be updated automatically via a scanned bar code or the manual entry of DIN, lot number and expiry date.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will learn the benefits of a national vaccine inventory management system, and how it will be used in Canada.
