BACKGROUND:
The Regional Early Childhood Immunization Network (RECIN) is an Internet-based, real-time immunization registry deployed in public and private provider offices in 23 Wisconsin counties. Development of RECIN is a collaborative effort between Marshfield Clinic and public and private providers. The goal of this effort was to improve the workflow involved in record keeping and reporting of immunizations and to increase immunization rates throughout the state. RECIN staff has been successful recruiting providers from the private sector due to features that can provide financial benefits. Since 70% of immunizations in Wisconsin are given in the private sector, obtaining private provider buy becomes a significant issue.
OBJECTIVE(S):
Increase private provider participation in an immunization registry by identifying workflow needs, creating flexibility, and providing financial benefits.
METHOD(S):
An immunization registry system can do more for a practice than just assessment and intervention. RECIN has the capability of providing cost savings through time saving features that include automating documentation, generating records, and providing patient copies. Other features such as billing interfaces provide financial benefits to providers to use registries.
RESULT(S):
Many private providers have implemented RECIN because of financial benefits. Facilities have documented cases of recouping up to 30% of potential lost billing by using the registry’s billing functionality.
CONCLUSIONS(S):
Private providers are increasingly being asked to do more work for less money. RECIN equips providers with a system that not only improves workflow but also improves financial outcomes. These two features have proven to be the winning combination to recruit private providers.
