BACKGROUND:
The Michigan Childhood Immunization Registry (MCIR) has participation from many hospital systems and managed care organizations which report immunization data. Since 2001, the State of Michigan has worked directly with Health Systems using a team approach with the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI) and the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH).
OBJECTIVE(S):
Provide central knowledge base and contacts for Health Systems.
Create a process for ease of data testing and flow.
Utilize Health System staff to promote MCIR as a tool.
METHOD(S):
The MDCH/MPHI team promotes MCIR to the risk managers and quality review staff at Health Systems for their data and reporting needs. A query method was provided to Health Systems for Health Employer Data Information Set (HEDIS) extraction. Health Systems were assisted in creating extract routines for reporting immunization data to the MCIR. This included a process for testing and approving the files for data quality before transferring to the MCIR.
RESULT(S):
The team approach of technical staff and data quality staff from MPHI and MDCH was successful in testing and approving Heath System extract routines for transfer of quality, current immunization data to the MCIR. Health Systems have utilized the MCIR/HEDIS extract. Immunization rates and data quality are improving in the MCIR.
CONCLUSIONS(S):
MCIR has become an integral part of immunization reporting and quality assurance for many Health Systems in Michigan. Health Systems work with their provider sites to make sure data is reported, and have been able to increase their immunization rates significantly.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will learn how to use team strategies and processes for working with Health Systems.
