Intenet access for parents
BACKGROUND:
Who's data is it anyway? This is one of the questions being asked when health clients request on-line access to their medical records. A few progressive health insurance and health care providers are offering this access to their clients. Now that SIIS projects are evolving it may be time to allow parents and guardians access to their families, immunization records.
OBJECTIVE(S):
1.Identify why parent access to recores is of value for (1) providers (2) parents and (3) State Immunization Programs.
2.Identify when this access should be allowed.
3.Identify how to overcome the various problems to ensure this is a Win-Win-Win for Parents-Providers-State.
METHOD(S):
Drawing on 10 years of SIIS strategic planing, development, and implementation experience this presentation will identify why parents should have access to their families on-line immunization records. Lessons learned from technical, state programmatic, and registry marketing will be summarized to illustrate 7 key issues, (1) improved data quality (2) increased provider services, (3)improved preparedness for communitywide outbreaks either natural or through bioterrorism (4)... A strategic plan will be presented.
RESULT(S):
A vision for on-line parent access will be established along with value added benefits that can be used in statewide marketing and education efforts.
CONCLUSIONS(S):
The sooner parents have access to their records on-line:
-- the faster the registry will grow,
-- the better the quality of the data and
-- the provider service levels wil increase.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Leave with discussion points that may be used to support private provider retention, address issues raised by IT support staff, and leverage the value of the information.
