Implementing a Train-the-Trainer Workshop for Registry Staff

Tammy Pilisuk, Immunization Branch, Immunization Branch, CA Department of Health Services, 2151 Berkeley Way Rm 712, Berkeley, CA, USA

KEYWORDS:
training, education, standards, curriculum

BACKGROUND:
The Registry Train-the-Trainer Workshop was established for registry experts who may not have extensive experience training people on computer applications. The training also provided a setting to introduce a statewide Registry Training Framework (training manual) to registry trainers throughout California. The workshop was designed incorporate both generic training skills-building and core curriculum from the framework manual. Regional input was used to develop an experience-based training curriculum.

OBJECTIVE:
To build the capacity of registry staff who provide in-office training on the registry application to new users. To enhance statewide consistency in registry new user trainings and to build on the successful methods of experienced trainers in the field. To provide a focused look at training standards, content and methods.

METHOD:
The workshop agenda was developed to reinforce the topics covered in a newly prepared traners' manual. Agenda ideas were shared with a planning committee and speakers were sought from various regional registries to cover sections where they had experience and measurable success. A professional trainer was selected to address basic skills and cultural competency in medical offices.

RESULT:
The result is a full-day, interactive workshop featuring an array of topics to support and expand the framework manual and build the capacity of registry staff as professional trainers for their private practice medical office customers. Question and answer time allows participants the opportunity to share ideas and learn from each other. In addition, this workshop will serve as the forum where experienced trainers can share “best practices.”

CONCLUSION:
California’s Train-the-Trainer workshop has provided a valuable setting for all regional registry staff to review and discuss the Registry Training Framework. Staff now have received pragmatic information and strategies to enhance their role as trainers. This in turn serves to integrate consistent, quality standards into their registry training sessions with health care providers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will learn how California developed their model Train-the-Trainer workshop, receive an overview of the key concepts covered, and gain information useful for replicating this effort in other states.
