BACKGROUND:
In recruiting and maintaining providers in the New York State Registry, the most common barrier and concern is additional data entry workload on the practices.
OBJECTIVE:
To demonstrate the use of scanning technology to ease the burden of data entry on immunization registry participants.
METHOD:
At the time this abstract is written, we have purchased scanner and software, developed a scannable form and have begun creating a scanning interface. We need to develop an import routine to read the scanned data into the registry application, test the process using a participating practice, deploy the forms, scan and upload the data.
RESULT:
By drastically reducing the data entry time, we can increase the value of the immunization registry to its current participants and eliminate a common barrier to new participants. By centralizing the data entry, tools can be put in place to search for matching records automatically and/or manually.
CONCLUSION:
IRIS has considerable tools built in that allow practices to review their patients’ immunization history to reduce missed immunizations and avoid missed opportunities for immunizations. The practices’ staff would have more time to use IRIS to review their patients’ health history, instead of doing data entry. Additionally, when marketing to new providers, they would be more likely to participate if the benefits outweighed the costs.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will be able to determine if scanning technology can be used within their registry model to promote registry participation and increase immunization data productivity.
