KEYWORDS:
Contra Costa Automated Immunization Registry; CCAIR; Mobile eCCAIR; Pocket PC; Hand-held Devices; Cell Phones; dot-Net

BACKGROUND:
Contra Costa Health Services’ Immunization Registry software (CCAIR) has been used since 1996 at the county operated health clinics. However, immunization shots administered at remote locations that do not have access to a PC or in mobile health clinics (vans) are often not recorded on the spot, making the data error prone. Alternative methods such as downloading data onto laptops to be carried are not considered due to possible introduction of duplicates and loss of confidential data if the devices are lost.

OBJECTIVE:
To allow users who administer shots at remote locations to access the functionality of the Immunization Registry (eCCAIR) using mobile devices like web-enabled cell phones and PDAs such as the Pocket PC.

METHOD:
Mobile eCCAIR has been developed using Microsoft Visual Studio dot-Net’s Mobile Internet Toolkit technology.
The complex components that contain the algorithm for processing the data, including the one that calculates the next-due-date recommendations for shots, have been reused from eCCAIR. The toolkit generates the correct WML, HTML, and CHTML for the requesting device.

RESULT:
Mobile eCCAIR provides most of the desired functionalities of eCCAIR on mobile devices, allowing users to view and to enter shots from remote locations, in real-time, significantly increasing the quality and quantity of data stored.

CONCLUSION:
With the use of latest technology and reuse of the existing components, the functionality provided by the immunization registry could be easily ported to mobile devices.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
To understand how to make an existing immunization registry accessible from mobile devices.
