BACKGROUND:
An effective training plan is imperative to a registry’s sustainability. Common training challenges include remote provider offices and time and cost constraints associated with training. In West Virginia, two staff members are dedicated to training over 400 immunization providers. The geographic challenges of the state’s mountainous terrain add to the difficulty of providing convenient training.WVSIIS and STC partner to provide interactive on-line training as an alternative to regional group sessions and on-site trainings. This method reduces travel time and associated costs and reaches providers who would otherwise not attend training. Unlike pre-recorded training CDs, interactive on-line training retains a personal touch by allowing communication between trainer and trainee.

OBJECTIVE:
To measure effectiveness and efficiency of interactive on-line training as an alternative to regional group sessions or on-site trainings

METHOD:
Providers were trained by one of three methods: on-line, classroom, on-site. Measures of effectiveness: frequency of data submission, number of Help Desk calls by type of trainingMeasures of efficiency: cost and time associated with each type of training

RESULT:
Data Submission and frequency of Help Desk calls do not differ by type of training. On-line training requires less staff time and is less expensive than other methods.

CONCLUSION:
On-line training is an effective and efficient alternative to classroom and on-site training.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Workshop attendees will understand methods and value of integrating alternative training methods into their registry project.
