BACKGROUND:
This program assists providers using the San Diego Regional Immunization Registry by conducting recall and outreach to patients 1-2 years of age determined behind on immunizations.

OBJECTIVE:
Increase coverage rates of 1-2 year olds; update immunization information in the Registry.

METHOD:
Information on patients 1 – 2 years of age determined behind on immunizations is obtained monthly from the Registry. Phone and mail outreach is conducted. Parents are encouraged to return to their provider if immunizations are needed. When client is determined up-to-date, parent contact information is verified with provider and updated in the registry. Demographic information is also updated. Outcome data is determined monthly by the number of records brought up-to-date through the registry.

RESULT:
During the first quarter of 2003, 1213 records were reviewed, of which 501 were found up-to-date through the registry. Approximately 1700 outreach contacts by phone or mail was conducted. After outreach, about 55% of children were reported up-to-date or their parent had made an appointment or stated intention to return to clinic.

CONCLUSION:
Using the registry improves the accuracy of a provider’s coverage rate in bringing records up-to-date and decreases the need for individual follow-up.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Describe how to use the Immunization Registry to provide outreach. Identify how outreach activities can help to improve information integrity in the Immunization Registry.
