KEYWORDS:
VFC Electronic Vaccine Order Processing

BACKGROUND:
The Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR) is a population based registry ran over the internet via a browser, storing birth to death immunization information on Wisconsin residents. The Wisconsin Immunization Program supplies vaccine to some 700 Vaccines for Children (VFC) providers, many of whom are currently using the WIR.

OBJECTIVE:
Incorporate into WIR a transaction based vaccine ordering system to track vaccine dispersement and usage. Provide immunization providers a easy method of setting vaccine thresholds and vaccine order requests, with direct posting to their inventory.

METHOD:
Building on WIR's existing vaccine inventory transaction tracking system. New order entry and processing screens were developed along with packing and shipping label reports. The central VFC vaccine was entered into WIR, which then allowed for the processing of vaccine requests from it.

RESULT:
Providers no longer need to enter lot numbers along with vaccine type, expiration dates and dose quantities, they merely accept the processed order from the central VFC program. Vaccines can now be received by a central location such as a pharmacy and dispersed to facilities. Providing an audit trail and without re-entry of data. The VFC program can accurately see how vaccine was administered to clients and report on VFC eligibility.

CONCLUSION:
Electronically processing of orders significantly cuts down on data entry and allows for auditing from order processing to vaccine administration.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Benefits of having electronic vaccine order processing.
