BACKGROUND:
A key component to the continued success of immunization registries relies on the registry staff’s ability to recruit providers to use the application. As many provider organizations are beginning to use electronic medical records (EMRs), registries must be able to demonstrate value to these organizations. Frequently registries are seen as barriers within provider organizations using EMRs, as they create another avenue of data entry. Oftentimes barriers that are presented can be overcome with technical solutions.

OBJECTIVE:
When marketing to providers it is important to determine what the IT strategy of the overall organization is and then be able to respond to their needs in an efficient manner. Registries are not intended to replace the immunization component of an organization’s EMR, rather, they are meant to update it. Registries can also feed into an organization’s billing system.

METHOD:
Understanding the overall IT strategy and clinical needs of a provider organization is vital to developing successful processes and interfaces to link registries with provider organizations.

RESULT:
Providers are interested in lowering their overall overhead while continuing to deliver quality, cost-effective patient care. When you demonstrate the ability to return value to their existing EMR through interfaces, while at the same time improving patient care, providers become huge proponents of the registry.

CONCLUSION:
It is possible to raise private provider participation with immunization registries by demonstrating to them interfaces between the registry and their EMR returns value to their organization. This approach ensures that the provider organizations are reaping the full benefits of the immunization registry.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Describe benefits to linking provider organization’s EMRs with immunization registries.
