BACKGROUND:
The Michigan Childhood Immunization Registry (MCIR) is populated using demographic information in the Electronic Birth Certificates. Oakland County has over 16,000 births per year and over 47,000 children under 3 years of age with a record in the MCIR. The county WIC program has over 3,000 infants and 7,000 children enrolled. This is approximately 20% of the children under age 3 in MCIR. The immunization records for this large group of children can significantly improve the number of immunizations in the MCIR.

OBJECTIVE:
To increase the number of children with a complete immunization record in MCIR by assuring immunization data for WIC children has been entered into the MCIR.

METHOD:
WIC contacts families the day before their appointment and remind them to bring immunization records. A copy of the child's immunization record is enterd into MCIR by MCIR staff. If a child's record is identified as incomplete, a copy of the record is printed and the parent is contacted for follow up. Monthly reports are run to monitor the current immunization status for WIC clients.

RESULT:
100 records were entered with 93% having at least the first DTaP dose entered in MCIR. It is estimated that 50 to 100 children's records will be entered weekly. Reports are run monthly to monitor our success.

CONCLUSION:
Collaboration by staff of WIC, IAP Program, and MCIR will increase the number of children with immunization records in MCIR and help document the countywide coverage rate using MCIR reports.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Understand how WIC and immunization programs can collaborate with an immunization registry to increase the immunization coverage rate in a jurisdiction.
