Innovative use of Immunization Registry data with WIC, lead screening, Head Starts

Magaly C. Angeloni, Rhode Island Department of Health, 3 Capitol Hill, Room 302, Providence, RI, USA

KEYWORDS:
Data integration, multi-program strategy, preventive services, WIC, lead screening, immunizations, Head starts, monitoring

BACKGROUND:
The KIDSNET system holds data related to immunizations, lead screening, WIC, EI, home visiting, Vital Records and Newborn Screening data for children born from 1/1/1997. KIDSNET makes possible to monitor a child's preventive services, such as WIC, Head Starts, lead screening and immunizations.

OBJECTIVE:
Demonstrate the power of using registry data to engage children in preventive services.

METHOD:
Immunization registry (KIDSNET) was made available to 9 Head Starts and WIC. Head Starts access immunizations and lead screening data to streamline enrollment and follow up with providers as needed. WIC agencies monitor lead screening status of their participating children and tailor nutritional counseling accordingly. Monitoring immunizations is the next indicator that WIC will consider using to engage WIC participants in preventive services.

RESULT:
As a result of using KIDSNET, Head Starts are able to assess their participants' immunizations and lead screening status. WIC documents elevated blood lead levels as a nutritional risk. Developing a similar tracking mechanism for immunizations of WIC children is currently under discussion.

CONCLUSION:
Registries are of high value in the provision of preventive services, such as lead screening and immunizations, especially if joint strategies are implemented. Exploring the registry's potential by multi-program strategies can produce important outcomes only possible due to data on the registry.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Express the value of forming genuine partnerships to utilize data from registries
Consider the development of piloting projects for data sharing
Explore the benefits of inter-programmatic relationships
