Utilization of Registry Data to Enhance the Vaccines For Children Program

Jorge Reyes, Immunization Division, Immunization Division, San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, 332 W. Commerce, Ste. 108, San Antonio, TX, USA

KEYWORDS:
Registry; Vaccines For Children Program; Integration; Collaboration.

BACKGROUND:
The San Antonio Immunization Registry System (SAIRS) has worked in collaboration with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (SAMHD) Vaccines For Children (VFC) program to develop and distribute useful immunization products for use by private health care providers.

OBJECTIVE:
1.Provide useful information products for non-SAMHD entities.
2.Improve VFC Program vaccine estimates in terms of number of clients served.
3.Improve marketing of SAIRS by providing useful information.

METHOD:
The SAIRS has used Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (SQL) and Microsoft Office to create and distribute valuable information products for VFC provider sites. The SAIRS Team has been able to analyze dosage information submitted by provider sites and format that data into client counts sorted by age group and by vaccine administered. Dose information also shows numbers of clients receiving VFC vs. privately funded vaccine.

RESULT:
The information products have decreased the amount of time devoted to VFC provider re-enrollment by VFC staff thus allowing for concentration on outreach. Data made available to VFC providers has served to emphasize the importance of cooperation in terms of submission of accurate and timely consent form information.

CONCLUSION:
Fostering partnerships with private providers is important to the success of the SAMHD VFC Program in addition to reinforcing its link to SAIRS. Giving private entities useful information helps successfully market the registry within the community.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1.Show the value of provider data in terms of managing future vaccine needs.
2.Show that programmatic staff can utilize readily available software packages to create valuable information from existing data with only routine training.
