Expanding Data Use, What It Tells Registries

Abigail Ryan, Gary Layton, and Nasir Abdullahi. Immunizations, San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, 799 E. Rialto Ave, San Bernardino, CA, USA

BACKGROUND:
VaxTrack contains children 0-18 years of age in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties in southern California in a population based registry. Private and public immunization providers enter data in VaxTrack. As of July 2004 VaxTrack contained over 780,000 children’s records with 57% containing immunizations. In the 0-2 year old group 40% of the records have immunizations. This percentage increases to 48% in the 0-5 year old group. VaxTrack records with immunizations represent a specific demographic subset of the region’s children.
Immunization registries are data repositories. Often data is underutilized. As registries fill with data programs can use already existing data for analysis and planning purposes. Most initial data queries of VaxTrack were motivated by funders questions or ongoing monitoring of registry growth. In 2004 VaxTrack expanded the questions asked.

OBJECTIVE:
VaxTrack looks to use available registry data to plan and registry development.

METHOD:
VaxTrack gave public immunization programs data to support clinical reviews, planning and quality assurance in the private sector. However a student intern designed new queries and looked at existing data for other utilities.
New questions include trends over time for children in registry, individual provider QA assessments, characteristics of children in registry, and comparison of registry up-to-date rates to other surveys.

RESULT:
VaxTrack found differences between immunization up to date rates between groups and changes over time in age of immunization completion. VaxTrack used traditional questions to assess registry status.

CONCLUSION:
As VaxTrack matures within limits existing data can be analyzed to offer insights at the provider, county and regional level to improve immunization practices.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Expand use of registry data
Describe limitations of registry data
