BACKGROUND:
In December 2002, Rhode Island began working with HLN to design a web based version of KIDSNET, Rhode Island’s integrated registry. This project was undertaken based on earlier Provider and User focus groups that identified the KIDSNET application as difficult to use. The dial-in application also required installation of communication software and support files on Provider’s computers. The web-based version of KIDSNET was launched in February 2004.
OBJECTIVE:
To demonstrate how a web-enabled registry removed some barriers to Provider recruitment and retention.
METHOD:
The web-based version of KIDSNET was designed with easy to use features that were not available in the dial-in version, including access to reporting features. Additional information was displayed that previously had not been available, the design was more visually appealing, and navigation was easier. Provider sites no longer needed special software, only internet access.
RESULT:
The majority of KIDSNET users began using the web version of KIDSNET. The daily usage of KIDSNET increased. Technical problems related to printing and connecting to KIDSNET were reduced. The process of enrolling schools as KIDSNET users became feasible and was initiated. While some providers waited for a web version of KIDSNET to enroll others did not have web access in their offices.
CONCLUSION:
The web version of KIDSNET not only successfully removed technical barriers but also provided enhancements that encouraged registry use. Further enhancements are needed for some providers to perceive the benefits of registry participation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
To identify registry enhancements that can remove barriers to Provider participation in the registry. To identify registry enhancements that can increase the perceived benefits of registry participation by Providers.
