BACKGROUND:
To enhance registry recruitment and marketing activities to healthcare providers, as well as to provide support for users of the web-based version of the San Diego Immunization Registry (SDIR), a self-directed automated user’s guide was developed using FLASH software. The automated guide is available on CD-ROM as well as on a web site. The guide reinforces important tasks and concepts by taking the user through the steps necessary to operate the registry.
OBJECTIVE:
To develop an automated user guide for marketing, training, and on-going support for our registry.
METHOD:
SDIR sent a staff person to FLASH software training. Screen shots already prepared for a written user manual were incorporated into the automated guide. Once the guide was developed and tested it was posted on the Immunization Program web site and multiple copies were made for distribution with marketing materials.
RESULT:
A self-directed and automated web and CD-based guide is effective for provider recruitment and allows demonstration of the application with or without Internet access. SDIR users are given the guide on CD-ROM to consult with at any time. Use of the guide can also decrease user dependence on the registry Help Desk and other support staff.
CONCLUSION:
An automated registry user guide frees up valuable registry support staff and enhances marketing and outreach. Commitment to staff training or use of a subcontractor is required to develop this type of product.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Describe the advantages of a self-directed automated registry user’s guide for registry marketing and training.
