Double Provider Recruitment using the L.I.S.T.E.N. Approach

Debra Asselta, Maternal Child Health Consortium, Maternal Child Health Consortium, Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative, 2500 McCLellan Avenue, Suite 250, Pennsauken, NJ, USA

BACKGROUND:
Because interactions with providers in the community are so important to the success of the southern New Jersey immunization project, it is vital to have a system for not only creating a relationship but for sustaining it. The communication must be friendly, succinct, and frequent.

OBJECTIVE:
Getting providers to enroll in the registry can be difficult. Encouraging their continued participation is an even bigger challenge. Objective: to demonstrate the utility of the L.I.S.T.E.N approach; methods that help to recruit more providers, deliver ongoing communication and therefore, increase and maintain provider enrollment.

METHOD:
If the provider does not enroll on the first attempt, the L.I.S.T.E.N. (Learn. Identify. Solicit. Train. Enroll. Now.) is repeated. The MCHC immunization registry coordinator developed an easy approach to market the registry to the provider to nurture the relationship.

RESULT:
Initial standard outreach (introduction letter, phone calls,) to 308 providers---recruited only 1 in three months. Three months later, improved verbal approach, better knowledge about the registry, and much follow-up—recruited 19 providers. Six months following initial outreach effort, all 308 providers were contacted, this time utilizing components of the L.I.S.T.E.N. strategy--recruited 42 providers. Solicited feedback from the recruited providers revealed better registry knowledge and interface technology possibilities. Inquiry into the real needs of the provider and a sincere attempt by the recruiter to find out and report the answers strengthened the relationship.

CONCLUSION:
The L.I.S.T.E.N approach maximizes and enhances relationships, thereby accelerating enrollment efforts. If enrollment continues at the current rate, 100% of eligible private providers will be enrolled within four years.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Describe the L.I.S.T.E.N. approach acronym and discover how to create, communicate and execute a winning, valuable proposition--and fulfill project objectives.
