Rapid Deployment of School Acces to Indiana Immunization Registry (CHIRP)

Delaine Sans, Dewey Peterson, and Matthew Graphman. Immunization Program, Indiana State Department of Health, 2 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN, USA

BACKGROUND:
As of December,2003, there was a total of 180 public school corporations and 269 individual public schools participating in CHIRP. In March of 2004, the Governor of Indiana assigned the registry the task of increasing the public schools participating percentage from 60% to 80% by the end of September. In reality, this task needed to be completed by the end of May due to school ending for the summer.

OBJECTIVE:
To illustrate how the use of effective marketing skills can increase participation in an immunization registry.

METHOD:
Each unenrolled school corporation was sent an enrollment packet that described the features and benefits of CHIRP. It also contained an interactive training CD. Each school corporation was individually called and further explanation of CHIRP was provided. Each school and corporation was offered the opportunity to have one of registry recruiters visit for training or a demonstration of CHIRP.

RESULT:
School corporation participation expanded from 60% to 93.6% in 3 months (by the end of May), well over the 80% that was the original goal.

CONCLUSION:
Good marketing and individualized communication can rapidly increase school participation in an immunization registry

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will learn the benefits of effective marketing and communication to promote school participation in a registry.
