BACKGROUND:
Large, private providers struggle to successfully participate in the CHILD Profile Immunization Registry (CPIR). Data entry is cost and time prohibitive with existing staff resources. As providers implement EMR products, HL7 batch or real time data exchange is an attractive option. Registry staff can work as a liaison between providers and vendors to achieve successful electronic data transfer.
OBJECTIVE:
1. Identify a CPIR staff member as key contact for EMR vendors
2. Identify EMR products used by health care providers statewide
3. Identify EMR vendors servicing WA State
4. Educate vendors about immunization registries state- and nationwide
METHOD:
A CPIR staff person was identified as the key contact for EMR vendors. Commonly used EMR products and vendors for large private providers in WA state were researched. CPIR staff made direct contact with key vendors, setting up conference calls with the CPIR vendor STC when appropriate. Ongoing contact with key vendors kept the need for registry participation on the vendor project list. CPIR staff educated vendor staff about immunization registries nationwide and the need for a standard feature in EMR products to facilitate provider participation in immunization registries.
RESULT:
1. Direct contact with 5 vendors and VARs.
2. Educated vendors about immunization registries nationwide.
3. Obtained data sharing function as “standard feature” for one EMR product to date.
CONCLUSION:
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Recognize value of vendor/VAR contact by registry staff and need for ongoing contact.
2. Identify facilitator role of registry staff and potential for batch data exchange to become “standard feature” of EMR products.
