BACKGROUND:
Wyoming Department of Health currently maintains ~30 Client-Server Immunization Registries throughout the state. These Local Registries function independently from the state's Central Registry. The burden of maintaining these registries, in conjunction with the various county IT staff that maintain the local networks, has proven to be very difficult. Wyoming has decided to migrate local registries to a web solution. For each service provide, this solution will function as a stand-alone Registry that is capable of communicating with Wyoming's Central Registry via HL7.
OBJECTIVE:
To demonstrate the potential for smaller service providers to reap the benefits of mature immunization registries.
METHOD:
Comparison of system requirements, maintenance costs, and impacts to data collection process between Wyoming’s current install base of client-server registries, and the selected web solution.
RESULT:
Small web-based registries are more easily implemented and maintained than client-server registries. Further, a mature standard-based registry provides considerably more quality and functionality than a stand-alone, custom data collection applications.
CONCLUSION:
A mature web-based immunization registry is a viable solution for smaller local level service providers.
