PHIN for the Immunization Registry

George De la Torre, Consultant, 5161 Collins Ave, Suit 403, Miami Beach, FL, USA

BACKGROUND:
Public health agencies have been relentlessly trying to keep up with advances in technology and CDC initiatives. Using Public Health Information Network (PHIN) standards will insure the success of your immunization registry goals

OBJECTIVE:
To realize the business case potential how PHIN will provide the framework for all functions of an immunization registry

METHOD:
Hands on experience from developing a PHIN base application

RESULT:
PHIN provides the foundation for all public health use cases. Thus, bioterrorism, disease surveillance, environmental tracking, lead tracking, immunization and other clinical registries are all supported. PHIN consolidates all public health concerns into a comprehensive integrated application

CONCLUSION:
Public Health agencies can leverage PHIN collaborated efforts into their own work environments today. The PHIN standards will provide “best-of- breed” opportunities. For instance, if one agency developed a School Assessment Survey module, then other agencies adhering to PHIN standards could install the same module. This will promote agencies to build on each other accomplishments and allow for more funding options.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1) Know how immunization registry functions could be implemented.
2) Establish a cost-effectiveness approach for development and maintenance
3) Recognize the benefits from using open standards.
4) Learn how the PHIN standards could support the immunization registry.
