BACKGROUND:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) as a vision for the next generation of disease reporting and management. Thus far, NEDSS efforts have established a public health conceptual data model, a public health logical data model, and standards for data definitions and the electronic exchange of information. NEDSS also includes a CDC sponsored software tool set, the NEDSS Base System to support web-based data collection and electronic exchange of reportable disease information, and a framework for states to develop an Integrated Data Repository to house this information. However, issues remain for managers of statewide immunization systems and state Information Technology (IT) personnel as to how NEDSS impacts these efforts and how a State Immunization Information System (SIIS) and NEDSS Base System should be integrated.

OBJECTIVE(S):
This presentation provides a roadmap integrating an Statwide Immuniztion Information System (SIIS) with a state's NEDSS program, specifically addressing how the NEDSS Base System and the Integrated Data Repository can be integrated with an immunization registry.

Technical and programmatic lessons learned in SIIS development can be leveraged by disease surveillance initiatives, indicating it is essential that these programs work together.
