BACKGROUND:
Immunization providers need tools to learn about and monitor their delivery of immunizations. Supported by the CDC, the Ambulatory Pediatric Association and Society for Adolescent Medicine developed an innovative educational curriculum, Teaching Immunization Delivery and Evaluation (TIDE). TIDE is a web-based interactive curriculum that uses scenarios and problem-based learning to help providers improve their delivery of immunizations. The goals of TIDE are to improve knowledge, attitudes and skills concerning immunization delivery.
OBJECTIVE(S):
To demonstrate the TIDE online curriculum and encourage its use by those who deliver immunizations in their practices.
METHOD(S):
TIDE is organized as three self-contained modules that cover several aspects of immunization delivery. Module A presents sample cases that require making correct decisions for pediatric patients' vaccinations. Module B teaches a chart audit to measure practice immunization rates. Module C guides the learner through changes to office routines to improve immunization rates. All modules include learning objectives and evaluations.
RESULT(S):
The TIDE online training curriculum is an available educational program that gives practitioners a flexible tool to teach and learn immunization delivery and evaluation. TIDE is certified for continuing education units for physicians and contact hours for nurses. Future expansion will include a module on Adolescent Immunization. TIDE is available at www.musc.edu/tide
CONCLUSIONS(S):
TIDE is a flexible tool to teach and learn the effective delivery of immunizations to children. We anticipate that it will be used by a growing number of facilities and individuals.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Understand the importance of developing and using web-based training curricula for improving immunization practices; learn where to find the TIDE curriculum and how to use it.
