BACKGROUND:
There has been controversy over the safety of vaccines led to the creation of the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), a no-fault Federal system that compensates individuals for injuries thought related to vaccines routinely administered to children.

OBJECTIVE(S):
Operational since 1988, the VICP has successfully
met its legislative goals of compensating victims of vaccine-related injury, stabilizing vaccine pricing and the marketplace in general, and significantly reducing the liability of vaccine companies and health care
providers administering vaccines. Despite these successes, many challenges
remain.

CONCLUSIONS(S):
The presentation will cover the background, process, clinical aspects of claims by vaccine type, and current controversies, including Congressional hearings and possible future changes to the legal standard of proof required for compensation.
