BACKGROUND:
The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (LBDHHS) has developed key relationships with VFC Providers using the Assessment Feedback Incentive Exchange (AFIX) process to increase immunization rates of children.
OBJECTIVE(S):
To increase immunization rates of 50 VFC providers by 10% over a three year period as measured by CASA assessments.
METHOD(S):
Using the AFIX process, outreach workers from the LBDHHS assessed immunization records for VFC providers from June 1998 through June 2001. Quality Assurance Reviews and feedback were conducted for each provider. Feedback consisted of tailored education materials and strategies to improve immunization rates. Incentives, including posters, bandages, and postcards were also provided. VFC providers were encouraged to attend immunization information sessions that were held at the local health department and hospitals throughout the community. Follow-up was conducted with each provider.
RESULT(S):
A total of 72 physicians have joined the AFIX program from June 1998 through June 2001. During 1998-1999, the average baseline UTD rate for new providers entering the program was 54%. After follow-up, the UTD rate was 72%. During 1999-2000, the baseline for new providers was 72%. The end of the year UTD rate for all previously seen providers was 83%. During 2000-2001, the baseline was 64% for new providers and the ending UTD rate was 82% for all previously seen providers. Thus, immunization rates of 72 VFC providers have increased by over 10%.
CONCLUSIONS(S):
Providing assessment using the AFIX process increased immunization rates of VFC providers in Long Beach.
