BACKGROUND:
Nurses involved in immunization services are often on the front lines of immunization delivery. However, an organization specifically for immunization nurses to share information, exchange ideas, and support their role in safe and effective vaccine delivery has been lacking. The National Network for Immunization Nurses and Associates (NNINA) has now been established as a "grassroots" membership organization to advance the role of nursing in immunization services.

OBJECTIVE(S):
This presentation provides an overview of efforts to establish NNINA, an organization advocating immunizations for all age groups through support for nurses and others providing immunization services.

METHOD(S):
Methods include ongoing networking, marketing of membership, committee work, and exchange of information to develop and formalize the NNINA structure and support NNINA activities.

RESULT(S):
Since NNINA bylaws were drafted in 1999, over 100 nurses or associates have paid dues to become active members. A similar organization of nurse has been identified in Canada. Incorporation of NNINA as a non-profit organization is now being considered. Materials have been developed to market NNINA to publicize and increase membership. Discussions continue about how best to accomplish ongoing and meaningful collaboration with other provider groups.

CONCLUSIONS(S):
A professional organization providing a network for information exchange and ongoing support for nurses involved with immunizations is a viable idea. NNINA is emerging as a valuable resource to improve the delivery of immunization services for all segments of the population.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe NNINA's background, purposes, mission, and objectives.
2. Identify common barriers to professional networking in the information age.
3. Explain the benefits of establishing a professional organization specifically for nurses involved in immunization efforts.
