Planning Professional Immunization Education - Optimally Utilizing NIP Resources

BACKGROUND:
Updating providers yearly with current immunization information is a constant challenge. Immunization professional education planning at the state level should accomodate, compliment, support and strengthen local health agency educational efforts and reflect national direction. Over the past seven years, the California Immunization Branch has utilized the satellite downlinks and live CDC Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine Preventable Diseases courses as the top stone in a yearly planning pyramid. Each year, the Immunization Branch plans for Update courses, responds and accomodates local requests for speakers, and immunization educational special events. In addition, local agencies are encouraged to develop professional educational plans that optimally utilize the technical expertise from state and federal resources.

OBJECTIVE(S):
The objective of this presentation will be to describe the planning process for the yearly California immunization educational courses. How this plan is used to promote, support and facilitate CDC courses (satellite and live) in collaboration with local health departments will be described.

METHOD(S):

RESULT(S):
The result has been increased access and utilization of immunization expertise on a local level and large numbers of participants in CDC courses.

CONCLUSIONS(S):
A statewide plan and approach is suggested for states to optimally utilize NIP live and satellite educational program resources.
