B7: The Real Cost of Influenza Vaccination: What are Fair Provider Reimbursement Rates?

The workshop presenters will describe the results of an ongoing study of influenza vaccine delivery costs in San Diego, California; Rochester, New York; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The purpose of the study is to examine the time, personnel requirements, and cost to deliver influenza to the newly expanded cohort of seniors (50 years +) in ambulatory primary care settings. The results of time-motion studies will be presented and actual delivery costs will be compared to reimbursement data as well as the results of a survey administered to a representative sample of physicians in the three regional areas. In addition, projections will be presented of payer savings if reimbursement were increased to physicians for administering influenza vaccines.
Learning Objectives: Describe one method of establishing unit costs for health service delivery and list the major components of the unit costs. Identify two limitations of time motion studies to identify the components of the delivery of influenza vaccine.
