B3: California's Immunization Skills Institute: A Train the Trainer Workshop |
| The California Department of Health Services developed a set of competency-based training and information materials about proper immunization technique, which became widely available in 2001. To maximize the training potential of these materials, Immunization Coordinators in California developed a 4-hour curriculum designed specifically for medical assistants, the “Immunization Skills Institute.” The Immunization Skills Institute was launched in 2002. The ISI curriculum provides consistency in training across the state and reinforces the DHS focus on competency in immunization delivery. It increases the training capacity of local health departments by giving them all the tools they need to present a customized training program for the health care providers of their community. The design and materials of the ISI will be explained and demonstrated. |
Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1. describe the interrelated training materials that are available from California;
2. discuss the concept of competency as it relates to the skills and techniques needed by health care providers for immunization;
3. list the training benefits of the Immunization Skills Institute with its combination of video, live presentation, exercises and skills stations; and
4. list at least three areas of competency essential for the health care provider giving immunizations.
