Kathie Fazekas, Immunizations, CDC, 35 East Chestnut St, Columbus, OH, USA

KEYWORDS:
Immunization education, High risk populations, Increase immunization rates, Diseases are still around even if you don't see them.

BACKGROUND:
Tasked with a project to design a poster and brochure campaign to reach minority high risk population that do not go to clinic, hence children are not immunized and or are not immunized on recommended schedule.

OBJECTIVE(S):
Create a poster and brochure campaign to reach minority populations that incorporate their needs.

METHOD(S):
An outside company conducted two focus studies in two majour cities in Ohio that basically asked the question: what would you want to see in a health education poster that would incorporate your needs. Posters were designed that included the findings (color, graphics, language) and field tested (22 groups totaling 113 participants) to narrow the posters down.

RESULT(S):
Two posters were selected and brochures to correspond with the posters. The posters and brochures are being distributed to high risk populations in the minority communities.

CONCLUSIONS(S):
We must incorporate the needs and ideas of the community into health education material even if it may seem "risky". We must be willing to hear and act on the needs of the community if we are to succeed in reaching those populations those we have not reached in order to increase immunization rates.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Describe the process of a poster and brochure campaign to increase immunization awareness for high-risk hard to reach populations in the state of Ohio
