HL7 Theory and Issues

BACKGROUND:
The Wisconsin Immunization Registry has both bi-directional HL7 and flat file transaction capbilities. These interfaces allow for provider-to-registry, registry-to-registry and state-to-state sharing of immunization information.

OBJECTIVE:
Provide a reliable swift means of connectivity that many providers can and will want to take advantage of and that can additionally be used for connectivity to other registries and states.

METHOD:
Oral presentation with open discussion related to: funding, staffing, interface options and state and federal laws investigation

RESULT:
The wider the connectivity, meaning providers, registries and states all interconnect the better the population is served.

CONCLUSION:
Cost, staff, local, state and federal laws are all barriers to connectivity, which need to be overcome.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Practical use and hurdles for maintaining a connected immunization registry.
