Third Dose Polio Vaccine Coverage in Oregon Children: Assessing the Impact from Changes to Polio Vaccine Recommendations

Hilary Gillette, Oregon Health Services, Department of Human Resources, 800 NE Oregon, Suite 370, Portland, OR, USA and Barbara C. Canavan, Office of Family Health, Immunization Program, Oregon Department of Human Services, 800 NE Oregon Street, Suite 370, Portland, OR, USA.

KEYWORDS:
Registry, ACIP recommendations, surveillance, immunization assessment, policy

BACKGROUND:
In 1997 ACIP changed the timing of Polio 3 from a range of 6-18 months to 12-18 months, and then was changed back to the 6-18 months age range once the transition from OPV to IPV was final. Following these changes to ACIP recommendations during these years, an analysis of Oregon’s immunization registry, Immunization ALERT, identified new trends in the administration of Polio 3.

OBJECTIVE:
To determine the impact of changes to polio vaccine recommendations on the rate of coverage for Polio 3 in Oregon children. Polio vaccination policy changes will be reviewed and the trends in vaccine coverage illustrated for Polio 3 in Oregon.

METHOD:
Statistical analysis of Immunization ALERT records was conducted to describe trends and rates for Polio 3 in Oregon children born from 1996 through 2000.

RESULT:
Identified new trends in administration of Polio 3 in Oregon following ACIP schedule changes from 1997-2000. Preliminary data suggest a downward trend in the number of Oregon children receiving their 3rd dose of polio vaccine.

CONCLUSION:
The changes to polio vaccine recommendations and the switch from oral polio vaccine to the injectable polio vaccine have had an impact on the number of children receiving their third dose of polio vaccine and the age at which it is administered in Oregon. The use of ALERT data has been a valuable tool to identify changes to vaccine coverage rates when changes are made to the childhood vaccine schedule. These results support the use of immunization registries to rapidly monitor the impact of vaccine changes, and to facilitate the introduction of new vaccines in the childhood schedule.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. To describe the impact of changes to polio vaccine recommendations on the number of children receiving Polio 3 and the timing of its administration.
2. Demonstrate the use of ALERT data to rapidly monitor the impact of vaccine changes, and to facilitate the introduction of new vaccines in the childhood schedule.
