KEYWORDS:
Immunization Evaluation: Private Providers

BACKGROUND:
The DOCS program is an extension of the Greater New Orleans Immunization Network, a coalition of 10 area hospitals that provides free immunizations to children in the metropolitan New Orleans area. DOCS provides assessment, evaluation and training in pediatric offices.

OBJECTIVE:
To improve the up-to-date immunization rates of children in the New Orleans area by evaluating immunization practices in private provider offices and offering training and education based on CASA results.

METHOD:
CASA assessments are performed in Pediatric offices. An analysis is completed and prepared for presentation to the physicians and office staff. Assessment is followed up with recommendations for improvement and training and education of staff.

RESULT:
Results have shown that the up-to-date immunization rates in the private sector are the same as those in the public sector. There is evidence of missed opportunities resulting from misinformation, a knowledge deficit and inadequate tools.

CONCLUSION:
There is a misconception that immunization up-to-date rates in the private sector are higher than that in the public sector. Private pediatricians are in need of immunization training, education, resources and tools.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. To review an immunization program that addresses the needs of private providers.
