Does the Value of an Internet-Based Immunization Education Program Differ by Profession?

BACKGROUND:
An Internet Curriculum, Teaching Immunization Delivery and Evaluation (TIDE), is intended for all professions providing immunizations to children.

OBJECTIVE:
Does the perceived value of TIDE vary by professional type?

METHOD:
TIDE consists of 4 different modules, childhood immunization, adolescent immunization, assessing immunization rates, and improving immunization. Professional type was categorized as physician, nurse, student, and all others. An evaluation was completed at the end of each module. The evaluation included agreement as to the importance of the topic and the likelihood of changing practice (ratings from 1=not at all to 5=agree completely), as well as an overall rating of the module (ratings from 1=poor to 5 = excellent). We report on 107 physicians and nurses with complete data in childhood immunization module. Analyses used Chi-square and Fishers Exact tests.

RESULT:
Of the 35 physicians and 72 nurses who completed the childhood immunization module, most rated the topic as important (median 5-completely agree) and the overall rating of the module was excellent (median 5-excellent), there was less agreement that practice would change as a result (median 3-midpoint). Both professions rated the topic as important (92% 5 vs 91% 5) and rated the module as excellent (69% 5 vs 67% 5) but nurses tended to be more likely than physicians to agree that their practice would change as a result (19% 1 or 2 vs 39% 1 or 2, P=.09).

CONCLUSION:
Despite differing professional responsibilities, physicians and nurses agreed on the importance of immunization delivery and value of this teaching module. TIDE is a valuable teaching tool across the professions delivering immunizations to children.
