Implementing First Responder / Mass Immunization Functionality in a Statewide Immunization Registry: Louisiana

Mike Garcia, Scientific Technologies Corporation, 67 E. Weldon, Suite 110, Phoenix, USA

KEYWORD1:
immunization registry, first responder, mass immunization, bio terrorism, bio terrorism applications

BACKGROUND:
Mass immunization may soon be required. Tracking who has recieved the shot, was it succesfull, or why they didn't get the shot - are all critical elements to the success of this effort. The first wave of those to be vaccinated will be "First Responder". Information systems will play a key role in collecting, tracking, monitoring and evaluating overall readiness of states First Responder population. Integrating these applications with an existing statewide immunization registry will allow for the leveraging of existing capabilties that will provide for a high probablility of success in this effort.

OBJECTIVE:
Define the purpose of the First Responder (Bioprepared Response Professional) and Mass immunization applications. Define and discuss the pros and cons of implmenting these using the statewide immunization registry. Discuss and demonstrate the development and deployment strategies that the state of Louisiana used in deploying these two applications using the Louisiana Immunization Network for Kids Statewide.

METHOD:
Powerpoint presentation; discusion; live demonstration of the First Responder (Bioprepared Response Professional) and Mass Immunization applications.

RESULT:
An understanding of the relationship between First Responder / Mass Immunization applications and a statewide immunization registry. Understand reasons why you would want to use a statewide immunization registry as the development platform for these two applications. Lesson learned during the development and deployment of these applications in Louisiana.

CONCLUSION:
The immunization registry provides the core data, capabilitesm functionalities, and user experience that is needed to develope and deploy First Responder and Mass Immunization applications. Its important that BT and Immunization Program staff collaborate in these endeavors to leverage exisiting technologies, lessons learned, data, and capabilties when deploying applications in such a rapid manner.
LEARNINGOBJECTIVES:
-Describe the relationship and similarities between the First Responder and Mass Immunization clinics and the statewide immunization registry
-Describe the benefits of using an existing statewide immunization registry as the development platform for these applications
-Describe the lessons learned and deployment strategies used by the state of Louiana in developing and deploying these applications.
