KEYWORD1:
Non-required vaccines, Varicella, Pneumococcal disease, Childcare
BACKGROUND:
In the state of Arizona, varicella and Pneumococcal (PCV-7) vaccines are not required for childcare. Yet, children who attend childcare are considered at increased risk for these diseases.
OBJECTIVE:
Increase immunization rates for varicella and PCV-7 in children ages 2-5 attending childcare.
METHOD:
Measure the knowledge level of staff and parents on required versus non-required vaccines in childcare. Develop educational materials, using current statistics and information on varicella and pneumococcal disease. Modify the information so that it is geared towards childcare staff, as well as parents of children attending childcare. The educational materials will be provided in Spanish, as well as english, to accommodate the monolingual parent. The varicella and PCV-7 vaccination status of children ages 2-5 in childcare will be assessed prior to distribution of educational materials. The vaccination status will be re-evaluated again in one year.
RESULT:
Pending.
CONCLUSION:
Pending.
LEARNINGOBJECTIVES:
Evaluate the effectiveness of education geared towards the childcare population on increasing immunization rates of varicella and PCV-7 in children ages 2-5 in childcare.
