"Immunizations from A to Z"; Educating Indiana Immunization Providers

Angela M. Schick, Barbara L. Cox, and Priscilla J. Wyllie. Immunization Program, Indiana State Department of Health, 1031 Huntwick Lane, Indianapolis, IN, USA

BACKGROUND:
Immunization and Health Educators with the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) became aware of improper immunization practices state wide in physician offices during Vaccines for Children (VFC) in-services and enrollment process. The educators developed an “Immunizations from A to Z” educational training encompassing all aspects of immunization practices for health care providers.

OBJECTIVE:
To increase knowledge in safe and effective vaccine administration and practices while increasing immunization rates among Indiana children.

METHOD:
The educators developed a PowerPoint presentation and training manual that provides current and accurate technical and practical guidance regarding all aspects of immunization practices. Educational opportunities are free of charge and marketed through VFC enrollments, Assessment Feedback Incentives and eXchange (AFIX) process, conference exhibits, local health departments, colleges and the ISDH Immunization Program website. Presentations usually take six hours or may be customized to provide the components needed in the provider’s office or clinic. A course completion certificate is provided at the conclusion of the training.

RESULT:
At the end of each training, participants are asked to complete a course evaluation. Since the trainings commenced in March 2003, 417 health care providers have been trained with 362 evaluations completed. 97% of participants rated the overall training excellent or good. 98% agreed that they would use the information presented in their practice or organization. 97% also agreed that they learned new information.

CONCLUSION:
The “Immunizations from A to Z” educational trainings address knowledge deficits and promote safe and effective immunization practices among health care providers in Indiana. Up-to-date immunization education for providers needs to be an ongoing process as immunization recommendations are revised.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will learn how to develop and implement an immunization educational training program that is appropriate for all immunization providers.
