BACKGROUND:
Utilizing Nursing students in the delivery of immunizations is not a new concept, however, when two organizations collaborate to improve the delivery of the flu vaccine is unique. This model partnership has increased the counties immunization rate and provided a valuable learning experience for the students and a positive public outcome for the community.

OBJECTIVE:
To formulate a partnership that would serve the student's needs and the public. We utilized nursing students in the delivery of the flu vaccine for the 2003-2004 flu year through a partnership with a healthcare organization.

METHOD:
The partnership was established, formalized education for the students were developed, competency training was completed, and then the vaccination process began.

RESULT:
A total of 20,000 individuals received flu vaccines from this unique partnership. This model was cost effective and provided a valuable learning and clinical experience for nursing students and the community.

CONCLUSION:
Building strong partnerships with the community and with nursing schools was key this year in the delivery of the much needed flu vaccine. Nursing student involvement in the flu campaign has increased our communities awareness of the need for annual flu vaccination. This project will be used as a model for nursing students participation in immunization programs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will understand this unique model and how to partner with local providers and nursing colleges to achieve a public health initiative.
