Providing School and Childcare Access to an Immunization Registry - The Next Step

Pamela Johnson, Immunization Program, Washington State Department of Health, Box 47843, Olympia, WA, USA

BACKGROUND:
CHILD Profile, Washington State's Immunization Registry and Health Promotion System, aims to ensure all children from 0-6 receive the immunizations and preventive health care they need. Schools across the State have requested access to the Registry to facilitate compliance with immunization school entry requirements.

OBJECTIVE:
To determine a process and timeline for statewide implementation for access to the Registry for school nurses and childcare nurse consultants.

METHOD:
A pilot project, to assess the usefulness of school/childcare access, was conducted in a rural county during the fall of 2004. A data collection tool, staff interviews and site visits were utilized during the project.

RESULT:
The pilot is scheduled to end on November 30,2004. Data will be analyzed during December 2004 and recommendations made for a statewide implementation plan. More complete information about this plan will be included in the March 2005 NIC presentation.

CONCLUSION:
Participating pilot school and childcare nurses were unanimous in their support of access to the Immunization Registry. Sites varied in their desire to view only or have edit capability. Statewide implementation may occur in several stages.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Participants will be able to:
-Determine processes to develop a plan to provide school and childcare access to a registry.
-Learn the usefulness and effectiveness of expanding registry access.
