Learning Objectives for this Presentation:
By the end of the presentation participants will be able to discuss (1) Methods for maintaining an Immunization website, creating web-based surveys and messages; and (2)Creative approaches to web-based information dissemination utilizing staff talent and expertise.
Background:
An immunization information website can communicate accurate, timely immunization messages to varied audiences. Websites also allow two-way communication and feedback between the community and the immunization program. Website development and maintenance activities are most effective when Coalition partners and immunization program staff are involved. Web communication is not without challenges, including continuous maintenance, keeping up with technology and decisions regarding appropriate content.
Setting:
County Public Health Services, Immunization Branch
Population:
Immunization and registry staff, health care providers, school and childcare personnel, immunization coalition partners, parents and community members.
Project Description:
The County of San Diego Immunization website, www.immunization-sd.org, was created in 2001 to provide immunization information to several audiences, including San Diego Immunization Initiative (I-3) Coalition partners, health care workers, schools and child care providers, parents and the community at large. Last year the Website Improvement Workgroup, composed of representatives of various Branch teams, reviewed and developed, through consensus, a set of guiding principles that define the purpose, content, and format of the site for easier access.
Results/Lessons Learned:
Establishing a website was only the beginning! Maintenance of the site with relevant and up-to-date immunization information is a continuous activity. Building consensus, establishing protocols, utilizing the strengths of staff, and holding down cost are integral to our success. On our horizon are new capabilities including on-line surveys, registration forms, and a calendar of immunization-related events for our community, all to maximize use of the web for dissemination of immunization information.
